NUESTROS PROYECTOS

SPAN 3040 students and Mitchell Hall residents participate in service exchange at
Kelsey Apartments in Colombia Heights with visiting Central American students,
through Somos Familia. February 2011.

We work by collaborating with a few trusted partners in the community, identifying specific needs and goals and then engaging our resources within the university to achieve them.

We see success when the community operates as a whole, taking advantage of different strengths each site has to offer. As university students, we hope to participate in this exchange by serving as positive role models and mentors for younger members of the community, and in turn, learning from the experience and wisdom of our older neighbors.

BRUCE MONROE @ PARKVIEW BILINGUAL ELEMENTARY

Our newest partner, we will work to support the bilingual curriculum in grades K-5 at this model school in the Petworth neighborhood. Just as the children are supported outside of class by the work of HHMM, we also hope to extend support to the parents of the community by extending access to evening ESL and Spanish classes, so that the adults may learn and participate bilingually as well, regardless of heritage. We also hope to promote the spirit of bilingual education among all students through workshops with poetry in Spanish.

SOMOS FAMILIA

"We bring advocacy, services, organizing, and companionship into the homes of the elderly, while helping to build friendships across boundaries like race, class, religion, age, culture, and sexual orientation. More than simply a social service project, We Are Family is an experiment in building just, caring, and inclusive community — help us to realize that dream!" More from the website.

Our meetings with Somos Familia seniors promote unity and initiative in the community, asserting that one is never to old to learn or make new friends. We seek to share the rich history and diversity these residents bring to our neighborhoods while supporting access to programs for health, education, citizenship and the arts.
